Musicians Organization Renews Discovery Mode Criticism Amid Indie Expansion
Spotify is rapidly expanding Discovery Mode to independent artists, hoping to achieve a $100 billion annual income by 2032. However, this move has sparked renewed criticism and discussion of the oft-debated offering.
Organisations and individuals are challenging the implementation of Discovery Mode, a feature that gives artists and labels control over listener recommendations in exchange for royalty fees. After its initial announcement in late 2020, several congressional inquiries later ensued leading to criticism claiming this would further reduce Spotify’s per-stream rate. The future of this tool remains uncertain as scrutiny continues to mount up around it.
In an unprecedented move, Spotify’s Discovery Mode is now becoming available to independent acts with fewer than millions of monthly listeners. Reported by Ari’s Take in late February and reconfirmed at the Stream On event last week, this opens up a powerful royalties option for smaller artists – but it suggests that major labels may not be willing (or interested) due their controversial reduced streaming rate cuts.
As Universal Music Group kicks off the new year, they are taking steps to develop an inventive economic model for music streaming. They have already partnered with Tidal and Deezer on this project – but so far haven’t included Spotify as a collaborator in their ambitious effort.
Recently, the Future of Music Coalition urged its followers to take another look at a series of strong statements made about Spotify’s Discovery Mode expansion. They referred to it as an “oppressive wage diminishing plan” when first released in March last year.
Spotify has recently unveiled a new system called Discovery Mode, sparking controversy over its implications of wage suppression in the music industry. With this 23-year-old entity penning their opinion on what they call “the most brazenly anticompetitive form of payola we’ve seen in digital music,” it will be interesting to see how artists respond and adapt to these changing times.

As revealed in reports, the introduction of Discovery Mode on Spotify has caused considerable controversy. This new feature provides fans with increased access to lower cost tracks through algorithmic manipulation, however it comes at a price; an overall reduction in rates paid out to artists – ultimately proving detrimental for both parties.
Creators may be wise to consider their options before enrolling in Discovery Mode, which plugs music via Radio and autoplay with major distributors such as CD Baby, DistroKid, Stem, OneRPM and Vydia. Reports suggest that creators would pay 30 percent of royalties for streams gained through this program – a significant jump from the usual agreement.
Every day, the music world is being flooded with new sounds through streaming platforms like Spotify. With major labels having a guaranteed number of playlist spots and Discovery Mode available for eligible professionals, it’s no surprise we are seeing an influx in fresh talent appearing on these services every hour!

As a result of the Discovery Mode program, some artists are sacrificing royalties in exchange for greater exposure. However, there may be other musicians who risk missing out on potential fans because their music is not featured as prominently.
